UPCOMING ASOR performance, looking forward to an evening with close friends. 04.10.12
Open Interval
March 1 - 31, 2012
Curated by Rumi Koshino
Preview, March 1, 6 - 8 pm
As part of the exhibit series, HATCHINGS
A look at the conceptual work of three Seattle artists: D.W. Burnam, Gala Bent, and Garek Druss, Open Interval considers these artists’ visual forms as connected to their other non-visual practices. In drawings, paintings, and paper collage, Burnam (a writer), Bent (a mother), and Druss (a musician) manifest the otherwise imperceptible traces of their artistic processes.
The visual works of Open Interval are the evidence of the vast and unique landscape that resides in each artist.
Artist and Open Interval curator, Rumi Koshino was born in Japan and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Washington. Her work has been shown locally at Soil Gallery, Catherine Person Gallery, Form/Space Atelier, NEPO House, Roq La Rue, and Kobo at Higo. Koshino will be part of a two-person show at Cullom Gallery scheduled for July 2012.

Garek J Druss, Threefold, The Apex and Intersection. Watercolor, graphite, and ink on paper 6” x 4”. 2012.

Aquarius Records reviews the Mezektet cassette (they have the last 10 copies)
Got just a handful of these tapes, from a batch of 120, from this new-ish group featuring members of several aQ faves including Pussygutt / Wolvserpent and A Story Of Rats, recorded a few years back, and sold mostly on the recent Wolvserpent / ASOR tour. And for folks who are familiar with either or both of those bands, the sound of Mezektet isn’t that far removed, shimmering strings, melancholic steel string guitar, ominous percussion, all hazy and woozy and otherwordly, sounding at times like some sort of gypsy folks spinning at 16rpm, definitely a dark doomfolk vibe, but like the players’ other projects it leans toward the black and the metal, and in this case, actually does spend much of it’s time in metal mode, pounding drums and frenzied riffage, howled vokills, but here, those sounds are smoothed out and blurred, wreathed in high glistening crystalline tones, the sound a murky loopscape more than a proper black blast, almost as if Tim Hecker was trying his hand at black metal, needless to say, it sounds incredible, tripped out and heavy, atmospheric and darkly moody, definitely need to hear more from these guys (and gal). Hope this wasn’t just a one off, cuz it’s definitely as good as anything the various members have done in their other projects.
Sadly, we only have about 10 copies left, and pretty sure it’s already sold out and out of print. So grab one quick before it’s too late.
LIMITED TO 120, each one hand numbered, recorded on cool metallic green tapes.
Dull Knife will be in the studio for a live session this Saturday at Jack Straw Productions. We will be recording an hour long improvisational piece that will be aired on Sonarchy Raido, KEXP 90.3FM.
